Random Acts of Kindness

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]eople who know me are aware of my love of dabbling with photography, video, Final Cut Pro X (FCPx) and the like. FCPx can utilize plugins to help producers realize their creative visions. One such plugin, created by Yanobox, is Nodes, which is distributed through FxFactory. I first became aware of Nodes, a generative motion graphics plugin, about 9 months… Continue reading

@Apple and Feature Regression

This Apple fan boy is growing aggravated with Apple coming out with new software versions that drop features, sometimes significant features, without much, if any, warning. Recent Example The most recent example is the new iWork software. I am a huge Keynote user. Yes, I guess I’m a power user, now that I think about it. The new software is… Continue reading

Todd @Adobe

Well, after spending several hours yesterday trying to solve an error when my trial version of Adobe After Effects would launch, I was very frustrated. I blogged about that yesterday. Todd, at Adobe support in the After Effects group, is social media aware. I don’t know exactly how he chooses to track all things @Adobe, maybe through Twitter, maybe through… Continue reading

A Whole Lotta Luv

Well, yes.  Naturally I watched Steve Jobs emcee Apple‘s Back to the Mac event yesterday. Now, I must confess that when Apple first introduced the huge change from iMovie HD (version 6 in 2007) to iMovie (version 7 in 2008) I made no secret of my utter disgust.  It was a huge, enormous step backward.  Apple quickly responded to the… Continue reading

Oh Horrid Tragedy

Image via Wikipedia My main computer has had its 1T startup disk fail.  After nearly 24 hours of working on it, I at least have it running again.  I’ve had to take another 1T internal drive and make it the new start up drive with OS 10.6.x.  So far, I’ve had success getting all of my document files, my upgrades… Continue reading

Improved Time Lapse Process

This is as much to help me remember this as it is to share the info with all humanoids oninterwebs… This is the post production process I used when creating the Malaga Cove time lapse shorts.  After importing the footage from the camera into the computer: QuickTime Pro 7 ›› File ›› Open Image Sequence… Make sure images are in… Continue reading

Final Cut Pro

Well, after reports several weeks back that Apple had laid off a significant number of people from the Final Cut Pro team, I have been worried that Apple will either sell or even possibly eliminate Final Cut Pro. Now rumors are flying. The first rumor indicates Apple will redesign FCP with an emphasis on making it more prosumer friendly and… Continue reading

Proof of Concept

This will only be remarkable to me: a proof of concept—use the Canon EOS 5dMkII DSLR to create a filmic look. I shot this using a 70 – 200mm f2.8L in native 24fps, ISO 100, f2.8, 1/50th, using the Vari-ND to stop the exposure down, shooting at full 1920×1080 HD resolution using the superflat profile. The short little clip was… Continue reading

Now That’s Just Cool

I love stumbling upon a cool technology trick. Working out compression settings for video distribution is part art, part science, and a whole lot of witchcraft. Compression is just often difficult and can be very frustrating. Well, tonight I learned that if you take a movie file that has already been compressed (select one, of course, that looks really good… Continue reading
