Deadly, Beautiful, & at the End of Our Driveway

We were told that our property has many mushrooms, and the with rainy weather, we are beginning to see more and more of them. I downloaded an app that identifies mushrooms from photos you take. It provides the name and information about the mushroom.

This afternoon I shot this photo of a mushroom at the end of the driveway by the road. It’s color is vivid. It’s shape was perfect. And the app identified it as a Fly Agaric, a species of Amanita mushrooms. It’s lethal.

“Ingegestion of this mushroom will cause diarrhea, vomitting, abdominal pain, hallucination (especially visual), hemolysis (rupturing of red blood cells), irrepairable liver damage, breathing and circulatory failure.”

I’ve seen these all around the Pacific Coast for years and always admired them. Now they terrify me!

Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
