Happy Birthday Point Bonita Lighthouse

This year was the 160th birthday of the Point Bonita Lighthouse that provides safe passage into the San Francisco bay. I loved volunteering as a docent there at the lighthouse for 3 years! (Yes, even with GPS and other navigational devices, the ship captains rely on the lighthouses which always just work! Those tried and true old ways.) Special thanks… Continue reading

Thanksgiving Sunset on Overdrive

Those who know me know that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday by far. This past Thanksgiving1 was an extended holiday. Steve spent about a week out on the west coast and cooked his best Thanksgiving meal ever! Delicious. In our typical fashion of trying to minimize waist2, we did’t cook a turkey—just a ham. He cooked on Tuesday; so, we… Continue reading

You’re Kidding Me, Right?!

Today I was out shooting video and got fried alive. Terrible sunburn! Can you believe?! I get burned in the cool breeze off the ocean on a completely overcast day?! When will I learn?! Here are two pictures from the day…     One good thing from the day (actually this was a wonderful day all around), over 20,000 steps… Continue reading

I See a Whale…

Sunday was volunteer day at the Point Bonita Lighthouse. As always: stunning day! I counted, for certain, 7 different whales, perhaps as many as 12. They were very active, coming to the surface often. They were also very close to the lighthouse. One was particularly huge! In fact, it was the largest whale I’ve ever seen. Another was a calf.… Continue reading

East Brother Light Station Tour

I’ve mentioned before on my blog that I really enjoy volunteering at the Point Bonita Lighthouse about once a month. Ranger Sarah, who coordinates the PoBo VIPs (Point Bonita Volunteers In the Park) recently offered everyone the opportunity to take a day trip to the East Brother Light Station. A handful of us were able to go and had a… Continue reading

Between Rains

This holiday weekend was supposed to feature a visit from family, but the weather forecast called for rain; so, they rescheduled. And rain it has. We got out briefly this afternoon, got rained on a bit, but got a few pictures between raindrops. The smell of the sage and other desert plants was scrumptious! The wind was delightfully vigorous. By… Continue reading

The Golden Gate Bridge

The fog In the bay area is thick this morning, and I hear the fog horns blasting from the bridge. Two days ago I got up early to shoot the bridge at sunrise (from Fort Baker). I then went to Battery Mendell in the evening to shoot the Point Bonita Lighthouse at (what turned out to be) the non-existent sunset.… Continue reading

Volunteering at the Lighthouse

I really enjoy being a docent at the Point Bonita Lighthouse. Saturday was particularly noteworthy. I seriously thought the lighthouse would be closed because of weather, but at the last minute, the day cleared up nicely. Well, until a couple of brief storms rushed in from the Pacific! We close the bridge when the wind reaches 27mph. And while it… Continue reading

Fall And The Commons

Yesterday I was a VIP at PoBo—a volunteer in the park at the Point Bonita Lighthouse. I love volunteering there! It’s so beautiful. I leave with sore legs but a lighter spirit. We always have several hundred visitors. They are always so friendly and love the location. I am intrigued that every time I have volunteered at the lighthouse, at… Continue reading

And What a Birthday It Was

Thanks, everyone, for the calls, voicemails, Facebook messages, emails, birthday cards and gifts wishing me a happy birthday! Who ever would have thought I would live to be this old?!! The birthday celebration rituals began the day before my birthday with dinner at the restaurant, Paul K. As a starter, I highly recommend the seafood soup of the day––a delicious… Continue reading
