When I first met Steve, he had been sober for 10 years. Such had not always been the case. He was very active in AA and has been all of these years.
I just have never liked alcohol, and I actively hate drug use. I’m lucky these were never a part of my life. I will remove myself from the presence of those under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I just do not like to even be around it.
In the very early 2000s, I promised Steve I would go to his 25th anniversary meeting at AA when he received his 25 year chip. In AA they refer to these as birthdays. Well, time flies. Amazingly, that meeting was this past Monday, the 24th.
I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Steve asked a friend of ours to speak at the meeting. She had been my neighbor decades ago. At the time, she wasn’t sober. I hadn’t yet met Steve. She always tells him she knew me first. She’s a blast!
One thing is for certain: if Steve weren’t sober, we wouldn’t be married. I respect anyone who does the work of remaining sober. I’m crazy proud of him!
Happy 25th birthday. May we celebrate many more!
