Evans Fine Foods

Evans Fine FoodsToday I decided to have my big meal at lunch time. Having heard that Evans Fine Foods was going to close after 70 years, I wanted to eat there one last time to say goodbye to everyone (including some of their customer base that ate there as often as I).

Once upon a time Evans was virtually my kitchen. I ate out there at least once a week, usually two or three times. I’ve blogged about it here and here.

I was horrified when I pulled up. The parking area in front of the diner was virtually empty. Previously, finding parking was a challenge. Not today.

Sure enough, they are now closed.

Evans Fine FoodsI don’t know why they closed exactly. But the restaurant had been a family owned and operated business for as long as I ever knew about it. And while the food wasn’t especially good, it was reasonably priced, and I knew and liked many of the wait staff and the owners. For a long time I kept current on what was going on with the grandkids…

Wondering where to eat lunch, I remembered seeing a Golden Corral not too far from Evans. I have eaten at the one in my hometown. It’s an all-you-can-eat buffet. Over 250 foods served fresh. The one in my hometown has always made me a bit sick to my stomach, but the food is very inexpensive and is incredibly tasty. I decided to give it a try.

Well, no wonder Evans Fine Foods is out of business. The Golden Corral n Lawrenceville Highway in Decatur was so packed with cars I had to walk a distance to get to the door. The food was delicious: numerous veggies, great fried chicken, and many, many other items including steaks. So far no upset tummy.

But what was most astonishing was the price: just $8.34 for everything. I kid you not! I simply have no idea how they do it: all-you-can-eat, endless fresh food options! It’s a steal of a food value! At this price even Piccadilly will not remain in business!
