Brilliant! Churnalism versus Journalism

I’ve noticed for some time now that so much of what I read online and in my RSS aggregator feels like press releases. I’ve even got in the habit of asking myself, “Who is paying for me to read this ‘news’ story?!”

Well, the good folks at the Sunlight Foundation (I’ve blogged about them before!) have a browser plugin and a URL that will find out this information! I love it!

Select the page (or copy the text and paste it into their URL) and they will search known sources of press releases and other resources and present for your side-by-side comparison the results. Check out the video demonstration.

An attack on “churnalism” posing as journalism!

Check it out! Awesomeness!

(I wish they offered a browser plugin for Safari! In the meantime, I’ll just use the URL!)

Speaking of RSS, what are you going to do with Google Reader shuts down?

This is killing me, but, at the same time, my distrust of Google is growing exponentially. I’ve moved to Feedly. They claim the transition will be seamless. Just by using it they say all feeds were imported. Well, we’ll see… (I’ve exported an OPML file just in case!)

I actually preferred NetNewsWire before they hooked in to Google Reader. I hear rumors they will go back to offering the service they once offered pre-Reader.

The whole notion of major corporations trying to own RSS feeds makes me livid! (Google wants you in Google+ and Facebook has won legal battles over the “right” to own each of our RSS feeds in FB. In neither case is our RSS feed their property IMHO! Greed!!
