I’ve blogged before of my love of Downton Abbey, a Masterpiece Theater* series. Season one was so excellent, I couldn’t imagine how the second season could match it. Well, it hasn’t. Instead, unimaginably, the second season surpasses the first.

In addition to the glorious sets (Highclere Castle is stunning), stunning costumes, brilliant acting, and intense plot, the characters themselves are very engaging, not the least of which is Downton Abbey’s Dowager Countess Lady Crawley, the mother of the Earl of Grantham. Julian Fellowes, creator and principal writer for the program, gifted Maagie Smith, the actress who plays Lady Crawley, with some of the best one liners I’ve heard in years.

Enjoy this highlights reel of some of her lines:

*Interestingly, I was talking about this series while getting my hair cut earlier this week. One of the people next to me said of Masterpiece Theater, “Oh, you mean Master-race Theater?”. Indeed, Sausalito is a colorful crowd.
